The Eurovision Song Contest: That day of the year when Europe (and Australia and Israel, for some odd reason) comes together to celebrate music and diversity, as well as jaw-dropping productions, questionable fashion and choice of clothing (or, lack thereof, mostly).
This year's edition is finally taking place at Rotterdam's Ahoy venue following a one year Covid-induced break. Who will go home with the most douze points? We're about to find out.
We at RTL Today will of course be glued to our screens with popcorn* at the ready, and we were pondering whether we should host a live ticker commentary during the finals. Of course in the RTL Today style that you are used to: cheeky, spontaneous and sassy, all while including proper musical analysis and some background on the artists and meanings of the songs. We may even give away some goodies to readers who submit particularly entertaining commentary of their own..
Unfortunately we'll be unable to host a stream as we do not obtain the rights for it, but you can follow the finals on Das Erste (in German), or France 2 (in French), which will most likely be included in your home TV package, and for the fancy among us it will also air on BBC One (unsurprisingly in English).
Let us know below whether you'd be tuning in with us, and if the feeling's right we'll make it happen!
*Note from editor Martin: Going over Josh's article, I felt compelled to point out that the in-house Swedish editor will certainly not be eating popcorn, which to my mind would amount to treason. I will, of course, be munching on Swedish kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) and traditional dill-flavoured crisps, accompanied by lingonberry juice. All of this will take place on my Soderhamn sofa, with the snacks served in Gladelig bowls and the juice in Vardagen glasses. A picture of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia will be on proud display right next to your yellow and blue-clad editor.
**Further editor's note: Josh again. Going over Martin's note, I also feel obliged to point out that literally every second song is somehow composed, arranged or produced by a Swedish songwriter. Martin may even have written one or two himself - google Max Martin and you'll understand.
Who remembers Luxembourg's legendary submission in 1980 with Papa pingouin, showcasing the two sisters Sophie and Magaly along with dancers dressed up as penguins?
